Today it’s ALL about trains.

I’m going a little out of order here with my “Noah Thursdays” because there are two great, indoor, kid-friendly activities going on right now that I want to share with you.

First up is one of my all-time favorite holiday outings – the New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show. Housed in the beautiful Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the exhibit consists of a series of trains running along tracks flanked by miniature replicas of some of New York’s most iconic buildings and structures. The models are completely adorned with natural materials such as nuts, bark and leaves, which makes for a magical experience. The show’s designers have re-created landmarks such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Statue of Liberty and Grand Central Station (along with the Brooklyn Bridge, Rockefeller Center and the original Yankee Stadium, to name just a few). The detail and creativity on display truly defy description.

We’ve been going for almost 10 years and it never gets old.

Our next outing was extra fun for Noah because we took the train to get to the trains!

The Grand Central Station annex of the New York Transit Museum hosts a holiday exhibit each year.  A series of Lionel trains runs from a miniature New York City up to the North Pole. There are buttons (placed at kid level) to press at various points along the way to make different parts move. Vintage holiday “New Yorker” covers are displayed on the wall and there’s a great gift shop where Noah had almost as much fun playing with the toy trains as he did watching the moving ones!

We took Metro North right into Grand Central, making this the perfect excursion for a cold winter day. It was also the first time that Daddy accompanied us on our weekday outings, which made them even more special.
